about

Kerala Dream is the original sound track for Shiva Rea's, "Shiva Shakti" DVD recorded back in 2005. All the East Indian recordings were done on location while filming the DVD in Kerala, Indian.

This album is by far one of our best projects to date and deserved to be remastered with the updated technology available today.

Immense gratitude and love to Shiva for her vision, funding of this project and unending support.

*Vocals/Strings/Flute/Percussion elements and Tambora
pad recorded in Thiruvanathapuram, India at Iris Studios.
All environmental sounds recorded live by Craig Kohland
in the Maldive Islands, the Peruvian Amazon rain forest,
South India, and California.

Many of the vocal and instrumental elements featured on this
album were recorded in Kerala, India—hence the name of the
album Kerala Dream.
Craig Kohland, a well-known figure in the Los Angeles yoga music
scene, journeyed to Kerala with internationally renowned yoga
teacher Shiva Rea and a small film crew to shoot Shiva Rea’s yoga
DVD Yoga Shakti.
Acting as a musical supervisor, Craig worked with master Indian
musicians from Kerala to obtain the magical source material for this
album and the DVD.
Craig then brought the material back to Shaman’s Dream Studios in
Los Angeles where he and music partner Rara Avis blended the Kerala
recordings with contemporary elements to produce this wholly
original soundtrack designed for modern yoga practice.
By “music for yoga” we mean a pace, length, and feel that works to
enhance most modern yoga practices.
The music of Kerala is as old as her people and cultur e. Over the
years, many branches of Indian music have become prominent in
the region—kirtan, or folk music, which remains a starch root,
providing nourishment to all its offshoots; vaideeka, or the sacred
line of music; laukeeka, or the secular line; and natya, which is the
blissful imitation and fusion of the three.

The roots and grammar are the same in all
these schools of music, and are governed by a
basic concept called tauratrikam which denotes
the harmonious blending of the triad forms of
art—geetam (vocal music), vadyam (instrumental
music), and nrityam (dramatic dance). There
has been much borrowing and lending among
them and yet all these have a separate existence
and identity in terms of songs and singers,
instruments and instrumentalists, aims and
expressions, functions, and field of activities.
It is with love and devotion that Craig and
Rara offer a new fusion of these ancient forms
of music. Blending the traditional art forms of
the region with the contemporary sounds of
modern Western music is our way of making
an offering to the new form of yoga being
practiced today.
We dedicate this album to the healing of all
peoples affected by the tsunami of 2004.

"Shiva Shakti" DVD can be purchased on Amazon.
